What is Overpronation?

Overpronation is a condition when, after a runner’s foot strikes the ground the foot rolls more than 15 degrees inward to meet the ground.

After the initial heel strike, the ankle rolls and forces your big toe to do the vast majority of the ‘push’ off the ground.

If you look at the image below you can clearly see that as the foot strikes the ground the foot rolls inwards causing a lot of side to side movement. It’s worth also noting how sharp the angle between foot and the lower leg is and how this causes the runner to push off using the big toe.


While many people see overpronation as a bad thing the truth is that it’s actually very natural and while some say that it can lead to injuries (although this study by the British Journal of Sports Medicine certainly goes a long way to disproving that), you can minimise this by choosing the best running shoes for overpronation such as a pair that we’ve listed above.
