The Forerunner 220 watch impresses with its simplicity and features. Find out more in our review.
The SportsWatch Garmin Forerunner 220 is everything a running and cycling fan could want. The Garmin is a real coach trainer who keeps us company during our workouts and provides data and statistics in real time to help us make the most of our physical activity.
The Garmin 220 is a watch for sports with an integrated GPS. It has a color screen and can be used for outdoor and indoor workouts on a treadmill. We can match the course to our 220 smartphone via Bluetooth, but you can also synchronize with an HRM (heart-rate monitor or sensor cardio) thanks to ANT +.
Manufacturers of sports watches always aim for a good balance between attractive design, ease of use, advanced functionality, and training.
The Garmin Forerunner 220 integrates cutting-edge aesthetics and great usability thanks to very intuitive construction, but between all SportWatchs, Garmin is positioned in the middle regarding its sporting characteristics, which do not go very deep with regard to the planning of the training. This is also because the price range is economical compared to other models.
The official price of the Forerunner 220 is $ 199.00 for the model without heart rate monitor HRM, while it is $ 249.00 with HRM Premium. The best price at the time of writing the review to $ 117.00 for the version without HRM and $ 149.00 for the clock all included on Amazon – definitely a nice savings. [BUY it on AMAZON]
Review Garmin Forerunner 220: Design and Construction
The Forerunner 220 comes with a high-resolution color display, 180 x 180 pixels, so it can be used with any light. It is very light: the smartwatch weighs 40.7 grams and is very comfortable to wear thanks to the strap, which is well suited to wrists of all sizes. The perforated strap is very similar to that of the TomTom Runner system, with even greater guarantees in the case of heavy perspiration.
The clock is aesthetically beautiful and very well-built. The choice of colors is judicious and varied, and compared to other GPS watches for running, it’s smaller and more comfortable on the wrist. The feeling is very similar to that of a classic watch, when actually the model we’re going to wear is a real computer for training. Each aspect of the 220 screen is fully customizable.
The Garmin uses a lithium-ion battery that allows the watch to have a very wide range of battery life modes. We used Garmin Forerunner 220 mode in “energy saving” for six weeks without ever needed to recharge it. In “training,” however, this smartwatch has an autonomy of 10 hours.
Review Garmin Forerunner 220: Features and Functionality
Garmin has thought of everything, even users with less experience. The Garmin Forerunner 220 function of “auto-scroll” is very useful; it allows you to view and scroll through pages with our statistics even while we train, creating a sort of live tracking.
The smartwatch is ideal for those who love racing but is also suitable for cycling. Forerunner 220 lets you record and measure the most important data relating to our workouts. With integrated GPS, the watch measures distance, pace, and heart rate by providing, in real time, statistics of our physical activity.
The Garmin Forerunner comes with a built-in accelerometer that allows you to calculate your pace, cadence, and distance traveled. The accelerometer lets the smartwatch record data on pace and distance, even if we are not running outdoors, for example, because we are training on a treadmill at the gym. It is a revolutionary and essential function that allows us to access such data without having to use the foot pod option. The Garmin Forerunner 220 keeps track of the distance covered even when we are running in an area not covered by GPS.
Garmin Forerunner 220: Training Coach
We pointed out in the introduction, and we repeat: Garmin Forerunner 220 is much more of a smartwatch. It is a real coach that allows us to control our every workout. In addition to the functions for running and cycling we just mentioned, Garmin has a number of other useful extra features for athletes.
This smartwatch allows us to set up alerts (sound or vibration) for the pitch, heart rate, or intervals of running and walking. We set the Garmin Forerunner 220 pace we want to respect for the duration of our training, and this revolutionary clock warns us whenever, for one reason or another, our pace is altered during training. Garmin Forerunner has always held onto the rope, so to speak, and, as a real “coach,” it has stimulated us to give our best during the race.
Another very useful function is that it allows you to record the length of training in order to have everything under control, even stopping to catch your breath.
For athletes always on a diet, Garmin also offers the useful function of calorie calculation based on heart rate and a function of calculating calories burned during exercise.
Garmin Forerunner also warns us when we beat a personal best recorded previously. After training, we can see on the smartwatch a history of our workouts to check our progress.
Garmin Forerunner 220: Statistics and Graphs Training
After every training session, do you want to view and analyze your statistics, but cannot always go directly to your computer? Garmin Forerunner 220 also caters to this need. By downloading the application Garmin Connect ™ Mobile on our smartphones and associating the smartwatch, we have instant access to the community at Garmin Connect where the Forerunner has already automatically loaded the data and statistics of our workout.
Garmin Forerunner allows us, using the connection of our smartphone, to identify and record our personal training and share it on social networks in an easy and intuitive way thanks to the LiveTrack feature.
A little “gem” for those who love sharing: this smartwatch allows us to receive feedback from our friends and fans after each workout by sharing real-time data on social media with Garmin Connect ™ Mobile.
