Asics Gel Cumulus 17 Review

The Asics Cumulus range has always been a popular choice within the running community. A robust shoe which has consistently provided a great balance of comfort, durability, and responsiveness. Asics have completely reinvented the cushioning on the Cumulus 17 so we were excited to put it through a few trial runs.

The Asics Cumulus 17 first appeared on our radar when it was rated number 1 in our poll of shoe for high arches. The fantastic heel cushioning and fit have many runners calling it the “glass slipper” of running shoes.

High praise indeed, but how would the shoe perform in our tests? There’s only one way to find out, let’s lace up and head out.

Asics Gel Cumulus 17 Upper

Fans of the Cumulus 16 will be pleased to know that Asics have listened to feedback and have made some changes to the upper of this shoe. Asics have opted to use a seamless upper on the Cumulus 17 which means no more rubbing when your feet get hot and sweaty.

For those runners who have high arches, you’ll be pleased to know that the heel support is outstanding. Your heel constantly feels locked in place while the tight midfoot maintains the secure feeling further down the shoe. The toebox is pleasantly roomy and never rubbed once.

The upper of the shoe is extremely breathable and kept my foot cool during long runs.

Asics Gel Cumulus 17 Sole

It’s not just the upper of the Cumulus 17 that’s been reinvented. It’s clear that Asics have spent a huge amount of time on the sole design.

The first thing you’ll notice is that Asics have introduced their FluidRide cushioning system to the shoe which increased the amount of cushioning that this shoe provides. There’s a comfortable 23mm of cushioning in the heel and 13mm in the toe which gives the shoe a 10mm heel-toe drop.

What we particularly like is how Asics have used their renowned Gel technology throughout the sole. This brings the familiar pillowy, cushioned sensation that fans of the Asics Cumulus range have come to expect.

Another huge plus for those runners needing extra heel cushioning is the crash pad.

It’s fantastic!

When striking with the heel, the crash pad absorbs the impact allowing you to transition well into your next step.

Sole traction is great, always feeling like your foot is planted firmly regardless of the conditions. Even when running on a gravelled trail my foot never once felt like it was going to slip.

Stability is certainly something that you can expect from the Gel Cumulus range and the 17 is no different here. Offering great ground cover, the shoe is stable throughout you entire stride.

The only downside that we could spot was that the increased cushioning has added a little extra weight, although to be fair this barely noticeable once you were pounding the pavement.

For anyone looking for a reliable neutral cushioned shoe then you can’t go wrong with the Gel Cumulus 17.

Realistically, it’s probably one of the best value running shoes on the market. We found them available on Amazon for $40 less than anywhere else online, priced just over $100.

Don’t get me wrong, these aren’t the quickest or most responsive shoes in the world. If you’re looking for a lightweight shoe to set blistering times in then, the extra cushioning will rule these out.

However, if you’re looking for a solid shoe that will see you effortlessly running up to and above marathon distance then these are certainly for you.

I was truly blown away by how much I enjoyed running in these shoes, they’re without a doubt one of the best pairs of running shoes that I’ve ever had the pleasure of running in.
