Nike Air Zoom Odyssey 2 Review

The Nike Air Zoom Odyssey 2 is the latest lightweight stability running shoe from Nike that offers a snug fit and gives you a smooth ride.

While Nike claim the shoe is perfect for all types of running, we found that this is the perfect stability shoe for fartlek, interval, and fast finish runs.

Basically, if you’re looking for a fast stability shoe for racing or speedwork then the Nike Air Zoom Odyssey 2 could be the shoe for you.

The Nike Air Zoom Odyssey 2

Nike Air Zoom Odyssey 2
Unboxing the Nike Air Zoom Odyssey 2, the first thing that strikes you is the design. Regardless of if you’re a fan of Nike running shoes or not, this is shoe looks fantastic!

The colors are vivid and the product is built to the usual Nike standard.

The Good: While the shoe may initially feel tight, once you lace them up, the shoes fits perfect with no slip in the heel. Running in the Odyssey 2, you get a real connection to the surface with a good level of cushioning.

The Bad: A 12mm drop can take some getting use to and certainly isn’t for everyone and the level of support could be improved.

The Verdict: The Nike Air Zoom Odyssey 2 wont be to everyone’s taste. However, if you’re looking for a lightweight stability shoe that’s perfect for faster runs then this is the shoe for you.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Air Zoom Odyssey 2 does sacrifice stability to make it lighter. If you want a shoe that offers a good level of support then you’ll want to find a running shoe that offers more stability (browse our reviews here).

What Owners Dislike

Nike Air Zoom Odyssey 2 Upper

When you first slip your foot into the Zoom Odyssey 2, you get the sense that real thought has been put into how this shoe fits your foot. The size runs true (my size 10 foot felt great in the size 10 shoe) and the inner sock feels close but not to the point that it’s going to cause issues with rubbing.

As with most modern Nike running shoes, the designers have opted to use both Flymesh and Flywire technology in the upper. A good choice and once again (as with the LunarEpic Low Flyknit) Nike seem to have finally perfected how to use this technology.

The upper mesh feels soft and does allow your foot to breath making it perfect for those short, quick summer speed sessions.

The collar felt soft while the heel counter secured my foot in place – the shoe didn’t slip once in over 50km of testing.

As some reviewers have pointed out – the outer mesh that sits over the inner sock can be prone to rip and does wear pretty quickly although this is purely cosmetic.

Nike Air Zoom Odyssey 2 Sole
It’s within the sole of the Zoom Odyssey 2 that we really see what the shoe’s like.

Cushioning is plush with Zoom airbags in both the heel and forefoot and gives a fantastic ‘snap’ off the road, weather your a heel or forefoot striker.

The first thing to note about the sole of this shoe is that for a stability running shoe, there’s little support. While the Medial support does extend to the forefoot, there wasn’t any issues with flexibility.

Outsole traction is good and I found that it wore down slower than that of the adidas Vengeful.

Is This Shoe For You?

So the big question as always is this – is this the shoe for me?

While there’s no denying that the Nike Air Zoom Odyssey 2 is a good shoe, I don’t feel that it’s a shoe I’d recommend to those runners looking for a support shoe at the moment… The support element of the shoe just isn’t there.

As other reviewers have noted, the cushioning seems to break down at around mile 6 which means that these shoes are strictly for shorter interval sessions.
